Although most people think of the West End when talking about performing arts, theatre and cinemas, East London has historically been home to some of the most important acting talents in the world. If you are a fan of the scenic arts, the area hosts small productions that reflect the local area’s history and diversity.

The Yard Theatre, situated in Hackney Wick, calls itself a ‘reimagined’ theatre. They work to reflect the stories, cultures, subcultures and communities of East London and prioritise their local audiences. They also mainly work and develop East London talent and run free weekly workshops to partner with local schools, local artists and develop young voices.
The Castle Cinema: If what you are after is a film, on the other hand, head to the Hackney Castle for an independently owned Cinema with a very diverse programme, showing from indie films to blockbusters. Originally opened in 1913, The Castle Cinema prides themselves in keeping ticket costs down to make cultural activities accessible as well as not showing adverts before their screenings, as oftentimes the companies shown in advertising before films do not morally align with the values of this cinema.
